Based on science, but grounded in clinical reality, this course reviews and updates OSHA-required training topics for ordinary and extraordinary situations, including general safety issues such as physical and chemical risks, and infectious disease transmission and control. Patient screening for aerosol transmitted diseases (ATD’s), transmission-based precautions for infectious individuals, and Standard Precautions are presented. A lively mix of activities, demonstrations, stories, prizes, and products keep this class engaging and “real”.

Attendees will understand options to manage:

• Bloodborne, contact, droplet and airborne diseases

• Skin disorders including allergies

• Injury & illness plan

• Current, immediate health concerns

• Hazards communications

• Reasonable precaution strategies

• Biofilms



Nancy (Andrews) Dewhirst, RDH, BS – Speaker

Ms. Dewhirst graduated from, and was a clinical instructor in Dental Hygiene at University of Southern California, and is now the course director of oral pathology and infection control in West Coast University’s Dental Hygiene Program. She is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant. Nancy is on the California Dental Association, ADA and OSAP Speaker’s/Consultants bureaus, has had numerous journal articles published, and has contributed to textbooks.
